The Ethereum blockchain runs a bit differently than the Bitcoin blockchain.

On the Ethereum blockchain, the transactions are not paid in Ethereum coins, but instead, it's measured in Gas.

Ethereum Gas is the computation power required to complete your transaction.
Just like a car that uses gas to complete it's trip.
You will need Ethereum Gas, to complete your transaction's trip until completion.

The exact price of the gas is determined by the network's miners, who can decline to process a transaction if the gas price does not meet their threshold. Because Gas it's used instead of Ether, the network fees are not directly impacted by the price of Ethereum, and it can be adjusted based to computational cost not to the value of the cryptocurrency.

Gas prices are denoted in gwei, with are worth 0.000000001 ether.

Gwei is short for gigawei, or 1,000,000,000 wei. Wei, as the smallest (base) unit of ether, is like what cents are to the dollar and satoshi are to bitcoin.
