It's time to talk about the weekly jobs report from our good pals at the Department of Labor.

This week’s report shows some great news for the economy, as the actual unemployment figures were lower than last week, and exceeded the estimates of our friends, the DOW Jones economists.

The weekly report showed that 712,000 Americans filed their first time unemployment claims, which is significantly down from the previous week’s 787,000 initial claims.

These numbers are also way lower than the 780,000 initial claims predicted by economists, and is the lowest amount of first time unemployment claims since before this whole thing got out of control back in March.

Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, believes the storm is not yet over, stating: “The plunge in initial claims does not refute the idea that the trend is rising; we expected a sharp fall because of the difficulty of adjusting for Thanksgiving.”

We’re all in need of extended enhanced unemployment benefits sooner rather than later.

Meanwhile, a recent report from the Economic Policy Institute shows just how much of an impact a new stimulus package containing extended enhanced unemployment benefits would have on the lives of millions of Americans.

According to their report: “extending and reinstating enhanced jobless benefits through 2021, in addition to getting the virus under control, could save or create 5.1 million jobs; boost GDP by 3.5%; and increase total personal income by more than $440 billion.”

That’s right...passing more unemployment stimulus will create over 5 million jobs!

The report also shows that the states that will benefit the most are Hawaii, California, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Nevada, due to their focus on tourism, leisure, and travel.

Finally, the great state of Minnesota recently announced that out of work high school students could be eligible for PUA unemployment benefits.

Youth equity nonprofit Youthprise filed a claim with the Minnesota Court of Appeals, where a judge determined: “an unemployment law judge incorrectly determined that high school students were ineligible to receive pandemic unemployment assistance.”

Youthprise Vice President Marcus Pope explained that this makes $14-$28 million available to young Minnesotans, explaining: “We’re thrilled, we’re excited and we’re a little exhausted from everything we’ve tried to do over the course of the last eight months to try to bring relief to young people.”

This is amazing news for those living in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but don’t delay, as applicants must apply before the December 25th deadline.
