Cryptocurrency - Wide Net Cast on Information Reporting as the Term Broker Is Not Clearly Defined

The Biden Administration's Infrastructure and Jobs Act has a sweeping information collection and reporting clause within the bill. Senator Rob Portman (R-Oh.) shoehorned a revenue source into the Job’s Act and defined it as better information reporting as a way to know who is interacting with a blockchain and having their personal information reported to U.S. Treasury officials making collection and enforcement easier and netting, according to Portman, an additional $28 billion.

However, the confusing language has left fellow republican members of Congress to speak out against the proposed revenue scheme as it is literally impossible. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) called the ‘broker’ definition too broad and the clause to be “unworkable.” Senator Ron Wyden (D-Or.) claimed he did not believe the junior senator from Ohio’s “plan” understood how the technology works--which would imply the senator from Ohio (who submitted the proposal) also lacked said fundamental understanding.
