Ethereum was initially described in a white paper by Vitalik Buterin, who was a programmer and a co-founder of Bitcoin Magazine, in late 2013. His main goal was building decentralized applications. According to his argument, Buterin mentioned that Bitcoin and blockchain technology could hugely benefit from other applications besides money and needed a scripting language for application development that could attach real-world assets, i.e., stocks and property, to the blockchain. Ethereum can also host decentralized applications (dApps), which are apps that function without a central point of control, making them fair and transparent. An example of a successful dApps built by Ethereum is CryptoKitties, which is a platform that allows people to buy, sell and even breed virtual cats. Besides this, Ethereum also has its own cryptocurrency known as Ether. Just like Bitcoin, Ethereum allows you to send and receive coins between wallets.

Ethereum has had several ups and downs over the past years. While it has been considered a ‘stable’ coin when compared to other cryptocurrencies in the market, Ethereum’s growth has been rapid, especially in recent times. However, the cryptocurrency market is very volatile, and nothing is permanent. For this reason, the price of Ethereum has gone through a number of fluctuations. Here is an analysis of Ethereum's price history: Ethereum got listed as a major cryptocurrency exchange in August 2015. The currency started trading at close to $2 – and crossed $3 for a brief moment. However, the Ethereum price flatlined after that and didn’t cross $2 for the rest of the year.
